Mattel Tops Q3 Expectations

Mattel Inc.’s (NASDAQ: MAT) fiscal third-quarter results topped analysts’ expectations. The Company said that strong revenue growth across all geographical segments and wider margins boosted its top line and bottom line growth. For the latest period, Mattel posted net income of $442.8 million or $1.21 a share compared to a profit of $365.9 million or $1.04 a share, in the year-ago quarter. Sales (including negative impact of foreign exchange fluctuation) increased 6% to $2.21 billion. While sales in the North American region rose 3%, it climbed 9% in international markets. Analysts surveyed by FactSet had forecasted earnings of $1.12 a share on revenue of $2.17 billion.

Shares of Mattel Inc. (NASDAQ: MAT) plunged about 7.20% by afternoon trade. The toymakers said that net income fell 24% for the fiscal second quarter. The bottom line felt the pressure due to flagging sales of Barbie line of products and a write-down of $14 million, linked to Polly Pocket line of products.

Major Movers on April 17; ALKS, CSX, BAC, MAT, AAPL, CAT

Alkermes Plc (NASDAQ: ALKS) rallied after the company said its mid-stage clinical trial of the drug ALKS 5451, meant to cure depressive disorders, showed it was capable of “significantly reducing” symptoms of depression. The Company said that it carried studies on 142 patients. Based on the outcome of clinical trials, the Company now intends to hold a meeting with the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and commence later stage studies.

Mattel Q1 Results Edge Past Street’s Estimates, Shares Gain (MAT)

Mattel Inc. (NASDAQ: MAT) reported a strong growth in fiscal first quarter earnings on Monday as toy maker’s top line was boosted by robust sales of Monster High and American Girl Dolls while fatter margin also helped driving up the  bottom line.
